Abrasive Plastic Deburring Media

Nova Finishing Systems Inc., has pre-selected and recommends the following media for use on most part applications and parts over 1/2" in size. Depending upon the roughness of the parts you are working, normally the fastest way to achieve a good looking surface finish is best accomplished using a series of processing steps rather than selecting only one media. To accomplish these tasks, the following is a description of our processing recommendations.

DEBURRING

Ceramic Media is recommended for all ferrous parts and/or where a lot of material needs to be removed in a short period of time. Coarse media (Briefs) will achieve a dull finish or 24 - 29 RMS in 20 to 30 minutes using Nova vibratory finishing equipment. Medium ceramic media will achieve a better looking surface finish of 18 - 20 RMS in about 1 hour after using coarse media. Fine ceramic will achieve a luster or a 14 - 18 RMS in 1 to 2 hours after using medium composition media.

Plastic Media is normally used on softer non-ferrous metals. Coarse media (Briefs) will achieve a dull finish or 20 29 RMS in 30 to 45 minutes. Medium plastic will achieve a better looking surface of 18 - 20 RMS in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours after using coarse media. Fine media will achieve a bright finish or 12 - 14 RMS in 2 to 4 hours after using medium composition media.

Organic Media abrasive mixes or our blend called 56A will deburr fine or delicate parts. This mix will achieve a sand blasted - without the small dimple texture) or a satin antique appearance in 3 to 4 hours. Longer time cycles may be required for large burrs. Please see note for use of replacement materials.

Light Weight Ceramic Media is a special ceramic composition similar in deburring characteristics and weight to plastic media; however, it has greater abrasion than plastic. Media has longer time cycle on ferrous metals, but has smoother appearance. On non-ferrous materials the time cycle is less but surface appearance is rougher.

BURNISHING

Burnishing is normally accomplished using steel or porcelain ball media. Our recommendation is to use porcelain ball media called microbrite over steel even though it does not work as fast, because you don't have maintenance problems, work hardening, bending, or distortion on thin parts. This media is recommended as a secondary step process after ceramic or plastic deburring. Mirror finish appearances are possible in 2 to 4 hours. The longer time cycle, the better the appearance.

POLISHING

Organic media achieves the finest surface finishes of all media; however, it also takes the longest amount of time. Our recommendation is to use our 56D or 56E blended mixes which use porcelain ball media to help[ speed up the finishing process significantly. These products are exceptionally good at achieving an almost buffed appearance on most parts. The product 56D is a softer material used primarily on non ferrous materials and 56E is recommended for use on ferrous materials.

STARTER KITS

Item 6 is an excellent beginners Kit for deburring and surface finishes.

Item 7 is a complicated 5 step processing Kit to achieve a mirror finish on all metals.

Media selection is based upon general applications and preform versatility. "Briefs" indicate only coarse media and "Kits" consist of equal packaging of fine, medium, coarse media. Model numbers show recommended capacity of media requirements and Nova equipment.
